Who can provide IV moderate sedation in Ontario?

Those who have Authorization from the RCDSO

Who can get Authorization to provide IV moderate sedation in Ontario?

  • Clinical training is held in a Type A (DG) Facility (highest level of permit available from the RCDSO)

  • Taught by dental specialist formally trained in anesthesia and sedation
  • Didactic and clinical training done by Ontario certified dental anesthesiologists and OMFS

  • Didactic requirement of 40 hours of lecture and seminar time taught only by dental specialists
  • We exceed the requirement

  • Clinical requirement of providing IV sedation with dental treatment on 20 patients
  • We meet this requirement and insure dentists have a full experience in this active participation: from check-in to discharge

  • Additional Training and certification required in ACLS
  • We provide ACLS training and certification process (with Heart and Stoke Canada) within the course for convenance of participants

Can I provide IV moderate sedation right away?

No. You must have authorization from RCDSO to provide IV moderate sedation.

You will have to apply for authorization with RCDSO which requires:

  • Completing application form
  • Provide certification of course completion
  • Provide certification of active CPR and ACLS
  • Pay a fee

Part of completing application is to designate if you are applying for Visiting or non-visiting permit. Non-visiting means the provider will not bring equipment with them and it will be provided by the facility.

You must also designate at which facility IV moderate sedation will be performed. This is because regardless of having a visiting or non-visiting IV moderate sedation authorization permit, the facility where the sedation is to occur must also have a facility permit. This is either a A(P1 or greater) permit or B permit. B permits facility have very limited equipment as a visiting provider brings nearly all drugs and equipment with them. The more common Type A permit is for a facility which houses all the sedation equipment and drugs and this is where a non-visiting authorization permit holder would likely work.
